Bacon was called Doctor Mirabilis, or the Admirable Doctor. His encyclopedic Opus majus (1267) urged that, in order to make the Roman Catholic Church the leader in the civilization of mankind, Christian studies should be expanded to include all the sciences; he placed great emphasis on the importance of mathematics and experimental science, disciplines practically ignored in the learning of the time.
