(Placename) a small island in the North Sea, one of the North Frisian Islands, separated from the coast of NW Germany by the Heligoland Bight: administratively part of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein: a large island in early medieval times, now eroded to an area of about 150 hectares (380 acres); ceded by Britain to Germany in 1890 in exchange for Zanzibar.
