Direct immunofluorescence analysis is not only proving very useful for differential diagnosis, but also adds insight into possible pathogenic mechanisms of
desquamative gingivitis and it is essential for diagnosis of lichen planus.
He gave a long list of possible diagnoses that included atrophic vaginitis, a foreign body, allergic hypersensitivity and contact dermatitis, trauma,
desquamative inflammatory vaginitis, erosive lichen planus, lactobacilli vaginosis, cytolytic vaginosis, streptococcal group A infection, ulcerative vaginitis with Staphylococcus aureus, and idiopathic ulceration associated with human immunodeficiency virus.
Most patients with cicatricial pemphigoid manifest oral involvement (
desquamative gingivitis), which can progress to the development of a residual scar in the buccal cavity (figure 1).
Congenital syphilis presenting as
desquamative dermatitis.
Desquamative inflammatory vaginitis is most likely a skin disease that affects only the vagina.
Ulcerations that occur, particularly on the anterior fornix, resemble
desquamative vaginitis.
We describe a case of an infant with multisystemic manifestations of congenital syphilis, including a severe
desquamative dermatosis resembling scalded skin syndrome.
(73) Pathologists need to be aware of mesothelioma involving the lung filling airspaces in discohesive fashion, mimicking
desquamative interstitial pneumonia, as cases will be understaged if this is not recognized.
Intra orally, generalized palatal erythema with typical
desquamative gingivitis was observed.
Erosive lichen planus (
desquamative inflammatory vaginitis) of the vulva and vagina is an autoimmune skin disorder that causes superficial ulceration of the vaginal mucosa (FIGURE 3).
Burning vulvar dermatoses include allergic or irritant contact dermatitis, lichen planus, Candida infection,
desquamative inflammatory vaginitis, and pemphigus.
