Gulf of Alaska program, which features four ships sailing on 72 voyages between Vancouver and Whittier.

Much of the meltwater that flowed into the Bering Sea via the Slims River had been, as a result of the glacier's receding toe, redirected south toward the
Gulf of Alaska. As a result, even as the Slims River dried up, the south-flowing Alsek River, a popular whitewater rafting river that is a UNESCO world heritage site, began running higher.
She explains that the US federal government, through the North Pacific Fishery Management Council and the State of Alaska, jointly manage the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands crab stocks, whereas the State of Alaska solely manages the
Gulf of Alaska crab stocks.
The Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands and
Gulf of Alaska Pollock fisheries have been certified to this standard since 2005.
The mass of debris collected and loaded onto the barge, which is roughly the size of a football field, represents just 1 to 2 percent of the cleanup work that remains in Alaska, said Chris Pallister, president of the cleanup organization
Gulf of Alaska Keeper, which coordinated the project.

But what Shell hoped would be its first drilling season produced a string of mishaps: the Coast Guard found defects in the company's containment barge, meant to hold oil in the event of a spill; one of Shell's two drilling rigs nearly ran aground; air quality violations were discovered on both rigs; the dome meant to contain a blowout at the wellhead was"crushed like a beer can." On New Year's Eve, a second drilling rig ran aground during a fierce storm in the
Gulf of Alaska.

Gulf of Alaska in 2012.
