Here was my personal highlight of the week, for I was able to look right down on to one of the glacier tongues - the streams of ice coming from the
glacier peak. It was difficult to comprehend the scale of what I was looking at and it was only when I saw three or four people at the foot of the glacier tongue like ants in comparison that I began to marvel at the enormity of Vatnajokull.
(This is historically accurate: Kennicot Copper--"Honeycutt" in the novel--owns mineral rights in the
Glacier Peak Wilderness and can develop them when it chooses.) Before his death the uncle hides himself in the mountains, putting bullet holes in the D8 caterpillars that are cutting the road into the mine site--not, presumably, because he hopes to stop the mine but rather to express his intractable resistance to it.
Champion, too, is planning to hunt for titanohematites in lava flows from other explosive volcanos such as the 12,000-year-old bed near
Glacier Peak in Washington.
In addition to Fisher's move, Marist coach Rory Rosenbach has resigned to take a job at
Glacier Peak High School in Washington, and Sisters coach Bob Macauley has retired.
