Nabokov provides extended commentary on this photograph, whose numerous details--the novel he is writing, the identity of the hotel, the chessboard-patterned tablecloth, his brand of cigarettes (Gauloises), the presence of family photographs, the history of his penholder, and the barely visible moth setting boards--Nabokov revisits in turn, concluding that "seldom does a casual snapshot compendiate a life so precisely" (256a).
