Benedict XVI
Originally Joseph Ratzinger. Born 1927. Pope (2005-2013). Noted as a conservative theologian before his election, he strove during his papacy to defend traditional Catholic teachings against the influence of secularism. He was the first pope since medieval times to resign from the papacy.
