As with all keyboard, there is a learning curve when going between them. My experience was no different, but this one in particular feels solid as a rock. I really like the addition of a backlit keyboard. As a single father in college, working in the dim and dark is when most of my work happens, and having an adjustable backlight is good for sight, and battery consumption.
The fingerprint reader works flawlessly, and as it should. I have two prints set up, and I plan to add a third in the near future.
All in all I'm definitely glad I spent the extra buck to go with this keyboard.
I decided to give this new Surface Pro 4 Type Cover with fingerprint ID a try. I’ve been using it for over 6 weeks now. It’s a huge improvement over the Surface Pro 3 Type Cover. The keyboard spacing and bounce is much better, and I find myself able to type much faster without making mistakes. The trackpad is also much better; I use it almost exclusively now and don’t even feel the need to use my Bluetooth mouse anymore. The fingerprint sensor works great also (I’m using Windows 10).
Cons: pizza grease is visible on the keys. No num pad (to be expected on a small computer like this, but still). And there isn't anything to hold the cover to the pro4 (like a clasp) so it can hang open like a slack jaw is you are holding it on the other side.
Here's why I keep buying them - they work with the proprietary interface that Microsoft won't let anybody else use - so it's a wired keyboard, not a wireless keyboard. That typically means a no-hassle installation (just snap it on), no bluetooth pairing, and no battery to go dead. All of that is wonderful.
They are also light-weight, so they maintain the portable part of the Surface tablet. The keyboard is thin and light enough to feel just like a protective cover for the screen. Yet it feels plenty stiff enough so that it doesn't bounce or bend as you type on it.
And who doesn't love the innovative magnetic hinge where it attaches to the screen, which allows the keyboard to sit at an incline that's just perfect for typing? That was a brilliant invention.
The Alcantara covering is everything that it is advertised to be - at first. It is soft and luxurious, and makes the keyboard feel more like a cover when it's closed. I don't think that I've ever really spilled any liquids on it or glopped anything otherwise disgusting onto the surface, but it seems rather stain resistant.
But for all the good features of Alcantara, it is the Alcantara that is the direct cause of my having to buy so many of these keyboards - it wears out. It's not a long-term material. It belongs on something other than a keyboard that gets used for 4-12 hours a day, 5-6 days a week, month after month after month.
The fuzziness in the wear zones on which the base of my hands rest goes shiny and a bit bare after a year or so. Then after another year or so the Alcantara at the bottom edge of keyboard starts to delaminate. The material is surprisingly thin, revealing some other kind of more durable material under it.
On some of my keyboards, I 've tried to glue the Alcantara back down to that underlying material - and that works, but it sure looks ugly. At some point in time, the delamination gets so bad that I replace the keyboard - with another genuine Microsoft Type cover, for which I again overpay, and which again delaminates.
You might ask - how long do I expect the keyboard to last? Well, I still have keyboards from the 1980's around here somewhere - and they still work. And they didn't cost nearly as much as these Microsoft Type cover keyboards cost. All Microsoft would need to do is put a more durable material on the keyboard, and it would be perfect.
