Fisher Pressurized Cartridge
Made in the USA with US and Globally Sourced Packaging and Materials!
When it comes to pens, if you’re anything like us you can’t settle with just any old plastic ballpoint. You expect and deserve more from your pens - much more. Our 30,000 square foot manufacturing facility is located in Boulder City, Nevada, where our products are both hand and machine tested, so you can write confidently with the knowledge that your Fisher Space Pen will never let you down!
The Fisher Bullet Pen
The original Bullet Space Pen was conceived in July of 1948 by Paul Fisher, who was soon machining a new pen design shaped from solid aluminum. This became our first Fisher ball point pen, the #400 Bullet Pen, and arguably the most popular pen of the twentieth century. This pen is now composed of all brass with a chrome finish. Often imitated but never duplicated, the Fisher Bullet Space Pen continues to be our most popular pen.
- Writes in extreme temperatures from -30 F to +250 F
- Writes underwater and over wet surfaces.
- Writes at any angle- even upside down.
- Each Fisher Space Pen is precision assembled, hand tested, and carries a lifetime promise against all manufacturing defects
- Cited as an outstanding example of industrial art, the classic design of the Fisher Bullet Pen has been exhibited for years in the New York Museum of Modern Art.
- The Bullet's timeless styling has been the topic of many art books and magazine articles.
Facts and History of the Space Pens:
The story of the Space Pen really begins with its inventor, Paul C. Fisher. Before he took to making pens, Paul worked in an airplane propeller factory during World War II. It was there that he gained valuable experience with ball bearings, knowledge that would come in handy down the road for creating ballpoints. He later went on to invent the 'universal refill' ink cartridge, which in turn led him to create the first 'Anti-Gravity' pen, patented in 1966. Although it is a popular misconception that NASA invested millions of dollars developing an anti-gravity writing instrument, the fact of the matter is that Paul had been working on the design for years and had invested roughly $1 million dollars into the pens development . Truth be told, in the beginning Fisher didn’t even set out to create a pen specifically for the astronauts; he was simply looking to make a great pen that worked without leaking. In the end he had developed what he considered to be the perfect pen – a pen with ink that would not be exposed to air, rely on gravity, leak or dry up, and that wrote underwater and in extreme temperatures. His breakthrough happened to be perfectly timed with the space race and he offered the pens to NASA for consideration. Two years of testing later and the Space Pen was approved to accompany the Apollo 7 astronauts into space. Despite the old joke that the Russians solved their anti-gravity writing problem by using pencils, Russian cosmonauts actually began to carry Fisher Space Pens on their missions as well, at about the same time that NASA did.
Fishers Pressurized Cartridges:
The secret behind the unique capabilities of our pens lies in the ink cartridge itself. Our refills are hermetically sealed, pressurized with nitrogen gas, and feature a tungsten carbide ballpoint tip - the same extra hard metal that is used to make armor-piercing ammunition. No longer relying on gravity to write, our pens are able to function at any angle, even upside down! In order to prevent leaks from the gas pressure, our ink has to be thick, thixotropic to be exact. Fisher ink is actually more of a gel than a liquid when it is at rest, with a consistency similar to that of toothpaste. It is only when pressure is applied to the ballpoint that the ink will take on the spreadable properties of a liquid, while still retaining the stickiness needed to adhere to nearly any material.

My only complaint is that being round (well, bullet-shaped) with no projections is that it will roll away when placed on a flat object, whether open or closed. I believe Fisher makes pens with a clip that would solve this problem, but by design I don't believe that those would be as compact. I do believe they use the same pressurized ink cartridge as this one.
The ink itself writes smoothly, makes a nice, dark, easy to read line, and seems quite smudge resistant.
I also have a Nite-Ize Inka pen, which uses a similar pressurized cartridge, has a screw-on cap, and a pocket clip. I like the clip because it keeps the pen from rolling around (when in use, you remove the cap, and attach it to the back of the pen body, much like this one) and gives you a way to keep it at the top of your pocket or purse. I think that having the cap be screw-on is a good idea for a pen designed with a clip. However, it does not collapse as small as the Fisher, and it is primarily made of plastic. It seems plenty sturdy, but does not quite have the 'forever' feel of the metal Fisher. On the other hand, it costs 1/3 less, and also has a tablet stylus built into the back end.
Owning both, I can say the Fisher has a more 'executive' look, and is smaller to pack around (both shorter, and smaller in diameter).
The Inka pen has a more 'utility' look, and has a clip to hold it to your pocket or purse, and a stylus on the back side. Also, some of the Inkas come with a little clip that attatches to a little loop at the top of the pocket clip, to attach to a zipper pull, backpack, or whatever.
Lastly, the Fisher has written on everything I have ever tried it on, but the Inka has skipped just a little on some of the really tough stuff. Also, the Fisher seems to make a slightly bolder line, easier to read, but the Inka's finer line may be more precise.
I hope this review was helpful.
I've heard of the Fisher Space Pen, hell, I'm sure everyone has at some point. I was just at the Orlando airport looking at some in the NASA store but it just never clicked for me to spend the money on a nicer pen. That is until I watched an EDC (Every Day Carry) video Adam Savage, from Myth Busters did[...]. He pulled this exact pen out of his pocket and spoke of how much of a life saver it was since he's always getting ideas. So he keeps one of these in his pocket, along with Field Notes Kraft Ruled 3-Pack
I bit the bullet and haven't regretted it since. Completely smooth and very small (about half the size of a typical pen when closed), I never leave home without it in my pocket. Even when I do have those work pens in my shirt pocket. It's writes clearly, doesn't skip around like a cheap ink pen and so far, has not chipped or scratch while being in my pocket with other items. I loved it so much, I had some engraved and gave them as gifts to friends. Pick one up, you'll be surprised you went this long without one in your pocket and now you'll smile when someone asks if you have something to write with. Pen comes in a hard plastic case, with information on its creation, inside a hard plastic box and then in a cardboard box. You don't have to worry about it bouncing around during shipping. Hell, you could probably chuck it loose inside a box and it'd arrive in perfect shape. Well worth the money!
Anyway! This pen is awesome, and does everything the company says that it does. It writes underwater, the ink comes out as soon as you put it to paper, you can write with it at any angle. Wonderful. Great. The thing is also SMALL, which is great for me - I’m a small guy, I’ve got tiny hands - but that might not be the case for someone else. Capless, the pen is barely three inches, and with it on, it’s just over five. I am fairly comfortable writing with it, but do not expect the pen to be normal sized. It’s not.
The one problem I have with it, is that in my case a least (I haven’t bought another cartridge) the ink sort of... blows. Like, worse than the ballpoint pen that you got in a pack of fifty for ten dollars. Truly, it’s not great besides the fact that it is dark. The problem is that the ink is a bit spotty, especially if you’re a normal person and don’t write with barbaric brute strength.
I’m using it on my Pictostone Jornal, which is a beautiful book. I got it because it’s a ballpoint and they’re not supposed to smudge. It smudges anyway on the stone paper, which is understandable, as every pen I’ve used to far does as well. I am now using a cotton ball to dry the ink before I turn the page. Boom.

Carlos
